    I know, I had never heard of it either, but it promises to replace DVI and VGA connections to your video card and monitor and offer full compatibility (via an adapter) with HDMI cables as well. Another thing to note is that DisplayPort (unlike HDMI) is royalty-free, so the smaller electronics companies should have an easier time integrating it.

    well thats great, i didn't even know hdmi was patented. we definatly need patent free hardware standards.

    that would define it as open standard right?

    That's how I understand it. The article and the wiki describe it as a "royalty-free standard", which I assume means free.
