There are probably easier distros to start out on than CentOS. Buuut Linux is Linux so CentOS will get the job done.
If you have issues you just have to Google and try to find the answers. If you are really stumped then just post a thread here with the specifics of your problems. I am sure the brilliant minds here would love to help!

i think you're turning from the dark side
If you're really interested in getting your hands into something i'd go with Debian or Fedora Core... but if you're just starting out and kind of want to ease yourself into Linux while still having the option to get your hands dirty i'd go with Ubuntu/Kubuntu. Most of your hardware will be detected and you won't have to goof around too much just to get your Linux System running. But you still can get your hands dirty looking around and modifying the system as you'd like. Ubuntu/Kubuntu is sort of aimed toward being used as a home or small office computer. There isn't much that comes with it for Servers or anything like that by default. It can easily be installed though.
As it was mentioned above, Google will provide you with a TON of knowledge. You can look up information on any Disto's you're interested in before you install them to figure out if it would be something you'd like.

Of course I have to disagree.

My point? There are worse distro's to start with.
