    Debian 4

i was interested in installing Debian just to play around with it. can anyone tell me why it has 21 cd's or 3 dvd's? I wanted to try out the newest release and that seems excessive even for a bloated distro.

Personally I always use the netinstall CD.

Even for a non-network installation, just the first CD is enough.

The Debian CDs are filled with packages classed in order of popularity.

The first CD contains the most popular packages (ie the ones required for the default installation --Gnome desktop). The last CD is filled with the packages least used.

Also, you can replace the first CD with a KDE CD or a XFCE one.

You can also use http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/#search to search the program to see what cd/dvd it is on

JIGsaw DOwnloader... It's Debian's version of BitTorrent.

I personally usually only need the first CD, too. I get it because I usually need to compile a driver that isn't included in order to get a working internet connection (wireless usb adapter), then get everything else from the online repos.

I also really like the new mutli-arch netinstall CDs. Now at least I only have to download 1 CD if I want AMD64 and i386 installation media.

The first time I installed debian was with Sarge and I burned about nine of the cds before realizing I didn't have to do that.
