i run Kubuntu OpenSUSE 10.2 and Debian (with KDE as my gui) but in the past i have used Ark linux

sorry i forgot to say i also run puppy linux off my 4gb usb when i am at college this distro is like my keys never leave home with out it

Well, Debian always defaults to runlevel 2 and has everything setup for that run level, including X. What probably happened is that you forgot to check the "Desktop Environment" options. Happens to everyone the first time they install Debian and aren't aware of this.

I'm using Red Hat Fedora 5 on my old desktop and Fedora 6 on my slightly newer laptop as installed OS's.
But I have a large (and still growing) collection of live CDs and DVDs for when I want to try something different or learn more by seeing how different distros are put together.
