    As explained in that same link, it's a result of a legal settlement between AOL and the GAIM developers.

    I really do hate how companies grab names like that. "Your name has some of the same letters as mine... I'M GOING TO SUE YOU!!!" In other words... just, wtf?
    Two levels higher than a newb.

    i want to sue lawyers, their sue happy endeavors have caused me pain and suffering. i fear for my safety at night, not sure if i will wake up sued or not.

    Yep, the new name is stupid.
    It sounds like piggin, well i mean gaim was a little stupid(sounded like game) and now it's even worse.

    Can they just name it: The GNU Messenger?
