Ah the joy of package management on *nix! It's a good feeling to finally get the hang of it ...

Well I feel your pain, and euphoria. I did the same thing with Mandrake a few years back. I didn't know about rpmdrake coolness and was also afraid of getting the wrong rpms and so I installed everything I wanted from source!

    Steve,

Are you familiar with Debian based distributions (Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc.)? Their package management is fantastic and you can use apt-get to pretty much install what you need (I haven't touched Fedora for a long time so I don't know whether they have apt-get or not.) In other words apt-get is a similar tool to yum.

I honestly love apt-get better than yum but at the end of the day a Linux expert might disagree...

P.S. Ah! I believe that the front-end to yum is yumex in case you don't like the console. For apt-get the front end is synaptic

I've been pretty happy with yum on both fedora and CentOS. Fedora is working on improving the management of their repositories, so yum should continue to get better.

pirut is actually a better front end to yum. yumex is slow and resource-heavy.

So there are other front-ends to yum and apt-get? * Sigh! * One always learn new things everyday! I hope I can be forgiven for my ignorance but I haven't used Fedora in a long time and since I am happy with synaptic why even learn pirut? (Please don't flame me...) Is it better or something?

Yes i've attempted to build a mythtv box using knoppmyth - which is built on debian unstable. so i;ve had a brief play with apt. I found it troublesome. Mythtv is challenging and even more so because i live in Australia - making it necessary to reconfigue alot of the north american settings. I've only recently had my linux cherry popped.. so command line stuff is still a little intimidating. I jumped to fedora to get a feel for linux so that id have a better chance at successfully configuing mythtv.
