There's probably many reasons, and they probably all overlap with the reasons you don't see many women in the computers/IT/programming world in general.

Many projects try to rectify this with various programs to encourage female participation. Some of these include GNOME Women, women@apache and Debian Women.

    GNOME Women sounds kinda kinky

My wife uses Linux just not as technically savvy as I am so I doubt you would see her here.

I think Linux is, for the most part, more "under the hood" than Windows, and since many women don't care about what's under the hood, that could have an impact on the number of women in the world of Linux. I'm just guessing, though.

Here's an interesting thread by a female senior citizen regarding her experiences with Linux:

It's funny, i was just having a conversation with two girls as to why almost all guys like video games and very few girls do. The two girls i was talking to vaguely said,"We just don't care about video games." So as a man, i still do not understand it... i'm baffled.

i'd say that's one of the bigger reasons. Woman might think: "oo this is faster i like it better" or "This is easier to use i like it better."

They don't care how it works (in the computer world) as much as they like how well it works. Although, as some of us have seen in the Novell ads... Linux is.. a woman!

We must travel in different social circles. A lot of the gamers (console games, anyway) I know... are women. I don't game (and I'm a man). Maybe the people I know buck the trend.
