I don't know why so many people voted DSL. It's so outdated and lacking of software. Siag Office is just a lame excuse for an office suite.

I voted Puppy Linux because it is small (90mb) fast, beautiful, and customizable.

Yeah, puppy is good. I need to play with it again, as it's been quite a while.

DSL is not outdated. DSL-N has 2.6 kernel and latest packages. software installation and updation is very easy.

i've got it running on a 233mhz, 64mb ram, 352mb harddrive. it hasnt got room for anything other than siag/abiword.
i find it a decent rescue disc for when it all goes wrong

Fluxbuntu and UbuntuLite Projects

Hi,

I would like to introduce 2 unofficial Ubuntu projects in this category.

Fluxbuntu based on Fluxbox and
UbuntuLite based on IceWM

Fluxbuntu has its own Live CD based on Dapper Drake.

UbuntuLite has a IceWM desktop which is to be installed after server install from Dapper alternate (install) CD.

I have compared the two projects and find more help and support on Fluxbuntu through their community.

I have an old machine standing in my room, not connected to anything yet, with an 8 GB drive. I don't have a WLAN card for it, so I can't hook it up to the network (although I could maybe hook it up to my good computer and then use that as a proxy).

It's an old DELL with 300MHz and 192 MB RAM, and an old Voodoo 3d GPU (don't ask me any details). I was going to turn it into a Xubuntu machine, since I know that Xfce is a better way to go than KDE or Gnome. What would be a good distro for it?

The coolest thing I would like to do to it (if possible) is make it run Beryl That would just be cool to show that this type of eyecandy runs on that type of hardware.

Hang on, isn't arch targeted at i686 and above (although it will run on i586 and less).

Arch is a really great distro

Well, I doubt anyone still has a functional computer that isn't a 686! Anything after the Pentium Pro and K6 series of processor will be 686. I still have a 486 laptop right next to my actual laptop, but the 4MB of RAM and no drives makes it useless for pretty much anything except Wolf 3D. I'm sure there's people out there with them, but like I said, they're not at all useful, at least not for a true desktop.
