    When will ATI support AIGLX?

    Hi there!
On my desktop I have an ATi Radeon X1650 Pro, 256 Mb. I heard somewhere that ATI fglrx drivers will support AIGLX with v 9, but where can I find out to be sure? I really like the desktop effects with beryl (i have it running on my laptop, which has a nVidia card). Since now I've got an income, I could get an nVidia card in a few months. The problem is - should I get a new card, or wait for better ATI drivers?

You can use Beryl with XGL instead with the current ATI drivers. Have you tried that?

Excellent! I've got version 8.36.5 (the latest, installed from livna). Do you know of any good, popular, working tutorials that I could follow? Because I really don't want to break my x server again. Thanks.

While we are at this (Sorry I don't want to hijack), but if someone can just tell me on the sideline which is actually the better choice between XGL and AIGLX? Or is it just a matter of preferance? I have only used XGL before...

Unfortunately I'm not a Fedora user so I don't have much experience there, maybe someone else here has done it already

XGL started as kind of a hack - it ran a GL accelerated X server ( on screen :93 )on top of the main X server (usually : 0 )to allow all of the trickery you are used to seeing that were not originally possible on the main X server. There were some side effects like direct rendering being disabled so some games and apps wouldn't work.

AIGLX is now integrated into X, and it allows all of the GL acceleration to take place in the original X server. It only runs one X server and negates some of the problems associated with XGL. I prefer AIGLX now though I ran XGL for a long time.

It works on very old ati cards, the ones that don't use the fglrx.
