DistroWatch - Top Ten Distributions
I noticed this new section on distrowatch today. A very useful addition I feel and perhaps a good place to direct new-comers to Linux who ask the inevitable (and understandable) question of "what distro?"

One of the things that bothers me about distrowatch's page hit ranking list is that they post news of every beta and rc release, which probably promotes more people clicking on the distro, which probably keeps some distros higher on the list than they would be if they only posted about official releases.
When it's all said and done, I take their lists with a grain of salt.
Still, the top 10 list is probably a good list for providing to new users.
Edit: clarified my remarks

The top 10 list was not derived from page hit rankings.
I am not sure where he put the list together from, but, if I had to guess I would say he put it together from his experience at monitoring the distros.
And he gives a good synopsis of each distro that is quite informative. How to know if you are a geek.

I think they're review of the Top Ten distros are very good! Clearly he tries to be unbiased, and is successful. He gives a very good account about where they come from and how they got to where they are today, then gives a good opinion about what's good and about what's bad.

From a informative perspective, it is surely a good start for newbies.
Of course, one could debate on the list and why some are (not) on it, but that is something which comes with the territority
