    looking for a laptop

So I got some money from the university in order to buy a laptop. It has to be less than 1400 E. As far as I have searched, really liked the HP Pavilion DV 6397EA. Please post your opinion about this laptop, or anything else it's worth buying. Also post if anyone has encountered any problems using linux with it.
    Thank you

I am not sure how close it is, but I have a DV6000 that runs Linux real well.
In fact I am posting this from SimplyMepis64.
I have not encountered any problems yet.

Generally, anything by HP (and Compaq for that matter) will work really well with Linux. I'd stay away from Macs unless you want something specific (like the Mini) seeing as they are very over priced.

I recently got a Compaq V3100 (14.1" screen, AMD TL-52 and nVidia graphics) for US$750! There are obviously much more powerful and ones out there, but you can get the point.

As an acer owner I can say I'm very happy with my Aspire laptop. Works perfectly with Linux too.

Macs overpriced? IDK about that. I recently priced a dual quad core 3.0 ghz xeon machine with 4 gigs of memory 256 meg video card and i think 500 or 250 gb hard drive. Similar priced systems from HP and IBM had nowhere near the power I could get from the Apple. Once I move and sell of all my Sun and PC equipment I will probably srsly consider the MacPro. I kinda want to hold out for eight core CPU's though lol.

A developer friend I have known for years uses an Apple laptop and loves it. Mac OS X has a spectacular easy to use interface on top of a Unix system. This means he gets all the eye candy, ease of use, AND ability to develop like he would in Linux.

Some of beryl's effects are already in OS X like "scale" and "magic lamp." On top of that I have heard of people getting beryl to run, not sure how because I don't even use beryl. I want Beryl to include the project looking glass style for a 'real' 3d desktop. Then I'd probably use it.

I really love my HP dv2000t laptop. It has great battery life (6-7 hours with the 12 cell battery), and is really light (5lbs).

It also has a 14.1" widescreen display.

I researched for a few months to find a light, ultra portable laptop with exceptional performance (core 2 duo, 2 GB DDR Ram) and great battery life.

Linux also runs extremely well, and everything on the laptop worked except the 56k modem, but I never really even tried to get that working.
