this was insane and kills your hard drive!
It's hardly an instant death. I have a harddrive with an overzealous controller that likes to park a lot and it was fixed with a simple command:
    Code:
    sudo hdparm -B254 /dev/sda
I popped it into my /etc/rc.local so it runs every time I boot and I've had no issues whatsoever.

the ubuntu bug maybe yeah but the one that i had in PC LINUX OS definitely killed my hard drive and i know alot of people said that maybe my partition table was screwed but i doubt it as before it died on me i could re partition it granted it took me three attempts! and anyways ive been fixing hard drives in pc's, mp3's, ipods, mp4 players etc. for ages, i did check for any physical damage and yep what do you know it had more dints on the disk then i have ever seen?! and before using the PC LINUX OS it was fine! as i was the one who installed it into the enclosure in the first place!

that was £100 gone in two days! the total of he laptop hard drive and enclosure, would of been around £150 i think? but i got a discount as i am a regular customer at my local pc shop i usually go to, as well as my actual dad who i no longer speak to but hell crap happens, i did go back to the shop for a replacement for the hard drive as i had warranty with it! but they wer all out!

so i just left it but after a while i decided i couldn't be bothered?!

That is interesting. My present drive gets noisy booting from the 8th partition with Mepis 8 on it, but is quiet booting from the other partitions with AntiX 8.2test1 and Ubuntu 8.04.

Probably the sliders are noisy when seeking so far.

A friend and I we needed a free Operating System to give a Computer Course.
So we decided from one moment to the other to try Linux and I stayed.
(I still have difficulties but I like it)

About 15 years ago I was in the Army and we were taught a course in Unix on SUN SPARC stations.. I was able to make windows and program other things in a very short time with guidance, but I have no idea how to type a word of it anymore..

I tried Red Hat Linux a few years ago, but found it to be useless. I was just goofing around the other day and discovered Fedora 10 online and decided to download and replace Windows on my laptop with it.. I'm amazed at how refined it is now after just a few short years! I've got email set up and IM and my bookmarks are restored.. It's really amazing how easy it is, and it's LEGAL, unlike my bootleg copy of Windows that I used to have! That makes it that much sweeter..

Well in 2005 I came across some people using Linux and was intrigued by it. Being a Comp Sci student I HAD to check it out. The first distro I downloaded was Fedora 5.. but I ended up using SuSe 9 for a month or so. I tried Slackware next and never looked back . I kept messing with it off n on, dual boot, VMware etc. Last summer (June 08ish) I again installed Slack and have been using it since as my almost primary os (I just have to jump into windows to get my gaming fix )

I'm using Linux for 1 day now, 'cause first my parents didn't want me to use another operating system than Windows...
After a few weeks begging he said 'okay'.
The first time I HEARD about Linux I wasn't interested to it at all, 'cause I had other things to do... Now I'm using Ubuntu, but I've got Windows on my PC too, so when start up, at first I've got to choose which operating system I wanna use.
Most people are surprised when I tell them I'm a girl who uses Linux and loves to play with computers, but they're not the only one... When I look at myself I just think: "Am I really doing this?"

Ha ha... seems a bit long ago now. Classic case for me; started a MSc in 1999, during which I met a nutty Italian dude called Aldo (I think) who faithfully recompiled his kernel as fast as they released them. He wrote his entire PhD in Emacs! LOL
Still, I got hooked on Redhat 6.2. From there on it was numerical increments of Redhat, then Fedora, now PClinuxOS.
    Viva Linux, Viva!
