Heehee! Another Linux girl! I'm a newbie too, using a an Ubuntu remix that makes it superfast and super simple for a newbie. We use a shared laptop at the dance studio that everyone borrows between classes. I didn't even know it was a Linux computer until it's owner mentioned it when I commented on how easy and speedy it is. I loved it so much I asked for the same thing on my home computer.

It's nice for non-geeky girls, but the more I learn the more I enjoy it! I may become a geek myself some day, lol. If it stays as fun to learn and has been so far!

Well, if MMag is the one I think she is, and the description she gives of her self (plus the fact that she has her location in the white side bar), I think the reason she wasn't allowed to run Linux is just a mother who's not too familiar with the system (such a shame).

First: I am the one who you think I am... YOU DO KNOW ME!!!
Second: Exactly, my mom didn't want me to use Linux, 'cause she thought it would only be risky...

As I said, her mom doesn't know the system, and Linux's safe design vs. Windows unsafe design.

When I used Linux for the first time, it was on the netbook from a friend of mine... I already knew it was Linux, 'cause I wanted to try it.
It's not zo hard to use, but also it isn't easy to start with... lolz!
Now I've got Windows AND Linux on my PC at home, so when I start up, at first I've got to choose which operating system I wanna use

i tried to get away from Windows for a long time, and several years back i couldn't get it to work properly. i had windows 98 or ME, i can't remember which. i heard about it and read about it and found tons of things on learning about security and hacking and programming to do with it, and wondered at first why it was supposed to be so great. i tried a couple of different things, but couldn't get it to work - one was a Windows installation - i can't even think of the name of it and i can't find it online now ... i think it disappeared.
i didn't have a cd-rom, but i tried that distribution ... it seems like it was something cutesy, the name - i can't think at all of what it was, but it was a small linux distribution that you could install from windows, but it always failed with a kernel panic for me.
then i kept using windows but thinking about using linux for a long time, then tried wubi on my new computer with cd-r/w and cd-rom, and it worked perfectly so i installed ubuntu by itself, then learned some, then tried Fedora, then moved on to the others. i like ubuntu because it's easy, gentoo is high quality, opensuse is good, slackware is very good. i don't really care for windows, so at the very least i'd have no reason to have it alone on my computer, and even dual-booting i don't have much reason to use it any time soon.

Unlike most windows converts, I did not get Linux as a replacement for Windows. I still prefer my XP machine for basic desktop use for one and one reason alone: I am familiar with it. My family (I still live at home) would also be much less than willing to switch from XP to an OS they know even less of, while they may eventually work better with it I do not want to re-train them in how to read dialogue windows and do other basic tasks.

I got Linux to get into OS development. I am experienced in C so I decided this would be a very educational step in advancing my knowledge. I'm currently waiting for a book to ship in to help me get started. My next step after that is to start making drivers, then I will start microchip programming (which I already know a little about) then finally tie all that together to start making my own basic hardware. If you can't tell I find low level programming intensely interesting.

Aargh, no, no, naughty, take you eyes off your wife's laptop! LOL
I tried to sneak in some changes once when I did a re-install post having the screen repaired. Man, did that go down ever so well. Wives like their laptops, cars and everything else to just work. Changing means learning something else, and there is no time for it!
Don't do it... ROFL ROFL ROFL
