I got started with Linux via Debian Woody PPC.
I was an avid Amigan and bought an AmigaONE G4 mobo. the above O/s was all that was available until Os4 was released.
It was a serious learning curve. I borked the initial install a couple of times right off the bat. But it was pretty damn good when I got it going and showed me there was a definite alternative to the Beast of Redmond.
And that's the way things stayed until Amiga Os4 was released. I stayed with Os4 until I finally got pissed off with the lack of new features.. Like CSS capable web browsers... Flash.. All the things you all take for granted were missing.
Of course debian was still installed and active but I had installed an extra ide card to get round a bug on the mobo and so the boot order was then wrong.. didn't matter to Os4 of course.. That was one of the good things and that's why I couldn't be buggered to sort out that issue.
I then installed Debian64 on our main PC and used that until my graphics card caught fire about 2 years later... That's when I installed Ubuntu 7:04 and played with the Feisty Fawn. Been upgrading Ubuntu ever since.
I love it.
AmigaONE is now disassembled and in a box in the loft.

It all started about 6 years ago when I would travel for a year once a week with a friend who is a linux guy. He would hitch on my car and throughout the travel he would just talk about linux linux linux. This got me interested so when somebody gave me an old laptop, I opted not to buy an xp cd and instead I asked him to install an ubuntu. I just can't remember the version. But it is only in this past 5 months that I really tried to learn and understand linux. Now, I became like my friend. If somebody would hitch with me, I would be talking about linux linux linux.

Hi, I installed Ubuntu Linux 9.0.4(Jaunty Jackalope) this morning. Before that i had Fedora 10(Cambridge,isn't it?), which i had installed 2 months ago, running side by side with my old Windows XP Professional OS. My Linux experience began when i read an article about Linux's superiority over Windows, and about open software and its development over the last years. At that point i was determined to try Linux out,and although i could do nothing on Fedora 10 that i couldnt do on Windows XP, i knew that there is definetely much more in Linux than what i had exploited.
With the installation of Ubuntu,i completely deleted my previous operating systems and i decided to "dig" into this open source OS as much as i could.Right after the installation of Ubuntu and the latest Adobe Flash Player,i registered on linuxforums.org,in order to join a community of Linux users i could learn from, knowledge being the key to unleashing the power of Linux.
I am pretty much aware that my story is not exciting or intresting to read, but i posted it anyway.

I know this isn't really my job, but if you have a question, post a new thread in the dedicated forum. That is if you can't find the answer using google.
I am not intending to scare you away, but this will help you getting more replies.
You won't need to post your E-mail address in the future and recommend you remove it.
By the way, how did you get started with Linux?Last edited by Bemk; 09-09-2009 at 06:26 AM.

I've grown up with always a PC around. Although pretty much nothing else than playing video games and later spending time on forums and such.
I'm guessing about 10 months ago from now, my elder brother, who studies machine engineering at the moment, showed me some of his C programming skills. (Pretty much nothing compared to an actual programmer.)
He got me interested. I played around a bit with C++ (i made a calculator!), then got interested in flash game programming (ActionScript 3), but those interests died quickly, and totally after the following event.
One day, out of sheer curiousity (i swear), i googled `how to become a hacker'. The first result was the HowTo from Eric S. Raymond. If you never did so before, take a look into that now: catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html
It amazed me in several ways. I had made my decision for the rest of my life. =P
My interests only got stronger with time.
I've ended up being a Free Software (as opposed to the dry Open Source) fan.
(Even aspiring peace-activist if you will...)
To be honest, Linux is just a small part of it all now. Could use anything else just as well, as long as it's Free Software, and good quality.

ive always been into computers ever since ive heard of them i was born with a heart condition that somehow entitles me to make a wish at first i wanted a big inground swimming pool but they couldnt do that so i settles for a gateway running windows 98 it was around the year 98 it was brand new out of the box huge 20some inch monitor i was about 8 i think when i got it and ive been using windows ever since 9th grade i started getting in trouble and my dad locked me out of the family computer we were running vista by that time so all i did was re install the os and made my own admin account after i partitioned the hdd
so i started with the hack and cracking thing i got into using torrent files of which are the best thing sonce superman or something lol
