Amazing applications that others may not be aware of

Shamelessly stolen. One thing that amazes me is there are always tons of new programs I have neard of before that are great. So lets get a list of such apps. They can't be really famous ones (firefox doesn't count). Lesser known ones. I will start.

Drivel - A GNOME journal editor posts to livejournal, blogger, wordpress, drupal, etc... Does spell checking, direct input of html, saving for later editing, and can handle categories.

Easy Tag - EasyTAG is a utility for viewing and editing tags for MP3, MP2, MP4/AAC, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, MusePack and Monkey's Audio files.

Htop - Like top, but more powerful.
Brilliant Mediocrity - Making Failure Look Good

Alltray -- dock any application with no native tray icon, works fine in KDE, Gnome and FluxBox.

KMobileTools -- it can read and write KDE Address Book, full import/export, read and write SMS, export them in KMail. phone's battery status indicator, direct dialing and call transfer etc.. these features depends in your cell's capabilities too.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thank you! This is such a big step up from top; it's exactly what I always wished top was.

For my part, I see a bunch of little-known good apps on Debian Package of the Day. A couple of good ones recently were sshfs and most.

I have to agree with Zelmo, Htop is one of the best programs I have found in a while

    Thanks Vergil83!

Yes excellent! Thanks Vergil83. I don't know many obscure apps, but I tried the Fish shell once (instead of Bash for example) and it's really good.

I think I'll always use Htop now ... Great idea for a thread btw; especially if it reveals any more apps of this quality!

I'll try the fish shell right now, have anybody tried zsh yet? I played with my GoboLinux installation and I felt it was amazing, after I uninstalled GoboLinux (because of the buggy Compile package manager) I tried to install it on Gentoo but I couldn't configure it properly (I didn't try very hard, just copied the .zshrc file to Gentoo)

However, here is the link http://www.zsh.org/

The only thing I can think of at the moment is SciTE, and it may be better known than I'm thinking it is:

It's a very nice, but small text editor.

One i really like, that i don't hear much talk about, is ImageMagick. It might be well known though, it has been around for a long time. Thanks for the htop reference, it's amazing! Also, the Fish Shell is pretty nice. i like how when you type help it opens your web browser and goes to a help page with a lot of information, not just easily answered FAQs. Although it might be kind of annoying for some people.

The reason i love ImageMagick is because it's so powerful! i can resize (with correct aspect ration), rename, add captions to a whole directory of images in one command! And so much more!

Resizing a whole directory of JPGs = for k in $(ls *.jpg); do convert $k -resize 1200 -quality 95 directory/newName-$k; done

I forgot to mention FreeMind. It's mind mapping software, for those of you interested in organising notes, planning projects etc ... Not everyone likes to use mind maps (as invented by Tony Buzan) but I like this package. It's powerful, easy to use and has a very active community.
