Room for another Windows Refugee?
Hey folks. I'm from Byron, Georgia and been an Ubuntu user for about 5 months now. I'm a Civilian electronics tech at Robins AFB and have a small custom PC business I'm attempting to get off the ground.
I've was a loyal Windows user up until XP when I became begrudged Windows user. When Vista hit the sceen it was time to be an ex-Windows slave all together. I just upgraded to Feisty Fawn and hope to have all my Windows dependancies resolved by years end. My laptop's EVDO card, a few games, and video editing is all that's holding me back. Open to any ideas and eager to learn so I help other Windows slaves escape.
Glad to meet y'all.

Welcome to the forums CyberReb81. I admire your plan to take a fw months to wean yourself off windows, and onto a new OS. That's the best way to do it -- not to expect you'll know everything all at once. Take your time, and do lots of reading, and you'll do fine.
Can't help you much with games or video editing, unfortunately, but I'm sure someone else can help out with that.
Welcome

Welcome! I think you'll find - over time - that you're really enjoying using Linux. It's a pleasure to have something you can lean on ...
Good luck with your business. I'm sure Linux is a great option for a start-up.I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso

Custom PC business? That sounds really cool! Do you have a site up or anything? I wouldn't mind checking it out.
WHat games do you play? Chances are someone somewhere got them working on your distro. I would suggest searching this forum. Welcome to the boards.I praise Webmin and PuTTy!

Welcome to the forums!
For video editing try Kino (just type it into your package manager, and get at least version 1.0). It's less advanced than the likes of Adobe Premiere, but it's pretty functional and it's free!
As far as gaming goes, I have had some success with the likes of Cedega, although it's best for mainstream games and can take a little patience to get some things up and running. Some games, especially smaller games like Vanguard, are hardly supported at all and may never run under Linux. I find Wine will do most things that Cedega will do, but be prepared for a major amount of tweaking.
Generally, for most packages that you're after, Linux App Finder has a list of apps that can help.
It's a little frustrating, but I keep a partition with WinXP Pro on it just for games and any other compatibility issues that I run into.

Back in '77 or so I went to College Park Georgia for a two week vacation and stayed almost six months. Where is Byron?
