I have no doubt that most of you have already read this, it's hard to talk about anything anymore without it already being known, but with that being said I feel a point should be made.
HBO has recently suggested a name change from "Digital Rights Management" to "Digital Consumer Enablement" as DRM inherently suggests restrictions simply by enforcing rights. Apparently we've got it all wrong, it's about "using content in ways consumers haven't before". Personally I don't see how it enables me to do anything, it restricts your usage of the product down to a very fine set of rules for how you are to use that product. Even if it worked as it said on the tin and let me copy files to my computer without being able to share them, I don't see how I've been "enabled" to do anything more than I already did.

All this serves to prove is that we're finally getting the message through that DRM is dirty and you shouldn't use it under any circumstances, a rubbish tip by any other name would smell just as foul. Keep your eyes open for these rebranding tricks, this is just the first trick of what I'm sure will be many to make us feel guilty about wanting our rights.

I think the words 'Digital Consumer Enablement' will make most people head for the hills. I wonder which board meeting suggested that? Not very catchy is it?

that was a really good book. but changing the name to such an opposite is like admiting there is something wrong with drm.
