    Bad High School Experiences!

In the " seen any good movies, lately " thread Fingal asked six queries about American high school experiences. I am and old man now so I do not mind embarrassing myself with the truth as I experienced it.

    get laid asap
When you get old you realize things that were not apparent to you when they happened. Boys do not realize how much studying girls do about males. Male teens are full of raging hormones that easily overwhelm any sense of reason. I was seduced by the girlfriend of one of my friends. I was not the first or the last as this promiscuous female kept a diary of her many sexual contests to relate to her female friends.

I have seen many a group of males being deliberately broken up by what I call the " Helen of Troy " syndrome where a female always wants males fighting over her and the easiest way to make that happen is through sex.

ace your grades or die and avoid being grounded

I combined these two because they are contained in one incident. In the 9th grade of Boston Technical ( an all boys school ) I had an ugly female French teacher who enjoyed her power over her male students. In my very first marking period she found a way to just barely give me the one and only " D " I ever got on a report card. This happened just before halloween. My mother and stepfather were so mad I was " Grounded " from that day in October until I received my next report card around Christmas time.

    get back at the bullies

I was seven years old when my mother married my stepfather. We moved into a big single family house far from where I grew up. Thus when I went to school I was a stranger to everyone. As most of you know I had a lot of fights my first year. I discovered something then about bullies. They are completely different when you catch them alone or when they see that you are not afraid of them. My stepfather played cricket and I found cricket bats to be formidable weapons of retaliation.

    disentangle yourself from embarrassing stuff

I got the nickname " Mr. Lucky " because I avoided being detected so often when we committed boyhood pranks. My most embarrassing day was spent at school with the back of my pants split open.

    seek advise from Jim's dad

I had to be very careful with just what I said to the grown men in my family. As boys will be boys there were a number of alcoholic males we could get to purchase liquor in the stores for us. All alcoholic males have stories to tell about their lives and the lives of others. Family men have images to uphold and thus keep their knowledge hidden.

My stepfather worked part time in the garage next to our house. The garage and our house were owned by an Italian gangster. My stepfather worked on cars and booked numbers. After a few months the men coming into the garage got used to me being around and would talk openly around me. I kept my ears open and my mouth closed.

At that time males always talked of the pain of war and the follies of government. My best education was listening to those conversations and seeing and hearing the pain endured by ordinary people losing their loved ones to government folly.

I also discovered that the image people project in public is not necessarily how these same people feel inside. I later discovered that this is a trait rampant in northern cities but frowned upon down south.

But i did quite like reading your story.

Great story cousinlucky! My school days weren't quite so colourful, but me and my friends seemed to spend a lot of long hot Summers building 'dens' in the woods and running around with air rifles, shooting stuff (and occasionally each other).

Some of my grades were appalling early on (I wasn't 'grounded' though) but I got back into studying in my early 30s, and finally ended up with a degree. I've never been in a hurry!

    High school was a bad experience for me also. It started in 9th grade. I have worn a hearing aid since I can remember, and most kids are pretty damn cruel when they want to be. The school I went to was predominantly Hispanic and of course I had to be born white, I don't think my mother wanted it any other way. So anyhoo I would be walking down the hallway to my next class and someone would walk up behind me and flick my hearing aid off from my ear. Needless to say, at first I was too intimidated to do anything about it but it kept on and on, then it seemed like the whole school was doing it. (not really just about 5 kids). So one day, my brother, saw someone flick my hearing aid off and he told me, he was going to kick my ass if I didn't do something about it. Well let me tell you something, getting your ass kicked by your older brother is very painful! =-}

So, a few days later, I'm walking down the hall and wouldn't you know it, some damn fool flicked my hearing aid and sent it tumbling to the floor. I turned around really fast, and leading the way was my fist........bad move, it was the biggest damn dude in the history of big damn dudes and my measley little fist hit him in the belly which didn't seem to do one damn bit of good, except maybe tickle him. I was horrified, this big ass dude was gonna hurt me if I didn't do something FAST! BAM!! BAM !!! BAMMM!!!!! I hit him three times in the face with my trusty history textbook, which I was holding lengthwise. He hit the floor and I hauled ass outta there before he could get up and get his hands on me. But the next day, he actually came and apologized to me and we ended up being "nodding" aquaintances.
From that day on, I was a monster, I was daring people to mess with me, look at me the wrong way, and most of all to flick my hearing aid. No one messed with that crazy ass white boy after this incident. But I carried my chip on my shoulder through high school and got into a few fights because I thought I was Barney Baddass.

PS, my brother still kicked my ass for unrelated stuff! heh

It seems that being a young male in the U.S.A. is just one daily challenge after another, MikeTbob. The will to fight; even if you are probably going to lose, is something that not all people find in themselves. My cousin Michael is one of those people that once you get into a fight with him you are going to have to beat him every day. In the army they made him part of the military police. My school years taught me the justice in payback no matter what form it took or how long it took to achieve.

I guess you could say I was lucky. I never had any real problems in high school but I was a pretty big guy even back then so it's not like I was easy to pick on. I got my fair share of teasing but it came mostly from friends and everyone else seemed to get it too so it didn't really worry me. I ran with a good crew who I'm still friends with to this day and I had a great time. That being said...

I do have a piece of advice for those who are in or will soon be in high school: don't worry about it. Even if you're not the most popular or the best-looking person at your school, you shouldn't form your own self concept based on what everybody else at your school is. I promise you, you will look back on these days years from now and realize just how stupid some people were in high school. The captain of the football team will likely be the deadbeat alcoholic on his second divorce and the prom queen will probably be a single mother with three kids by the time she's 22. It seems to happen with some consistency. Make friends with the people who want to be friends with you and stay focused. You can go out and have a good time but make sure that doesn't distract you from what's important which is getting good grades and going to college. Despite what it may seem like now, high school is not the pinnacle of your social or academic life. You still have many years left to shape yourself.

Sorry, might have gotten a little too cathartic there.

I didn't say you would look back and laugh. I said you'll look back and realize just how pathetic the social dynamics in high school are. You'll finally be able to separate yourself from it and move on. Believe me, it still pisses me off the way some people acted in high school. I wish I could go back and do some things differently, myself. Everyone could have had a much better time but you can't undo the past so that's where it ends. And I know it sounds cliched. I heard it all too but there's a reason for cliches. They're usually true.

Everyone's teenage years can go from one extreme to the other. Some of the times will stay with you the rest of your life. How these memories effect your disposition and character is entirely up to each individual to deal with. If you wake up in the morning and relive bad things from the past every day you are going to be a miserable person. No one has devised a way to change the past except to lie about it.

Life is a lot of trial and tribulations!! Being true and honest with yourself is all you really have to do to enjoy it.
