    Allardyce named as Toon Boss

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ed/6654121.stm

i'm sure those of you who follow football already know about this, but what do people think? i'm a geordie (from newcastle) and i think it's good news. he's done a good job at bolton and can help to improve newcastle on the relatively limited budget that we have (after blowing £50m on flops under sounness). his interview was positive and showed that he wants to take things forward. people might criticise his tactics, but i'd rather win the FA cup or UEFA cup playing long ball than lose them all playing Gullit's "Sexy Football".
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I didn't understand a word you just said.

But then I don't watch sports. Oh well.

I saw Newcastle playing once. They played my local team a few years back here. The whole team stayed on to sign autographs except for Shearer who ran as soon as the whistle blew.

    Come on the Wanderers!

    (Except Newcastle beat them 5-0...)

Most of what he said went right over my head as I don't watch EU sports.

Allardyce is probably the best English manager at the moment. If I were a Toon fan, I'd be expecting a top-6 finish next season, and an top-2 the season after. I really wanted him to get the England job, but I think the FA were scared he'd want to do things his own way (as they were with another top manager just before they appointed Bobby Robson).

Good signing no question. He's shown his quality at Bolton. Problem is the way the prem is at the moment you just can't help feeling that he'll be fighting for 5th spot at best along with Tottenham, Everton, Villa and probably even Bolton themselves.

Big question on the radio yesterday, "Are Newcastle a big club?" They have the fans, the stadium but haven't won a trophy in a generation...

...I'll leave you guys to argue it out

Would someone be so kind as to explain to me what a "Toon" is in the context of this thread?

I would also like to know what a "toon" is. A toon in America is a cartoon (as per Who Framed Roger Rabbit?)!
    I praise Webmin and PuTTy!

This may help some of our non-English friends

Basically in the accent of Newcastle many of the Newcastle inhabitants (referred to as Geordies) say the word Town like toon therefore they're football team (soccer to some of you) have become know as the toons
