DejaVu fonts...
If the DejaVu fonts devs keep working on and improving them, I'm thinking that they might become more or less the default fonts for Linux. They already include more characters than the Bitstream Vera fonts, and they do look pretty nice. If you look on their website, they are asking for help and they do accept requests for additional characters.
