    Any open source contributor here?

    Hi,

I am still treading the open source (Linux in particular) waters, and every day when I learn something makes me think how much of an effort must have been made by the non-credit seeking but knowledge minded silent army of programmers all over the world, wo get nothing in return but give away so much to the delight of the open source fans and users. I woule like to know from the members of this very forum, if you have been contributing your coding effort to any particular open source project or planning to do so in near future. What do you say about the feeling when you submit the code? Can you please tell me the names of the applications/project that you have been actively involved with? Thanks a million...

You mentioned programming, but there are more ways to contribute to the open source movement than that. You can help to debug code, write (and publish) useful information etc.

A good guide to all this is Eric Raymond's 'How to become a hacker'.

I don't programme either (no time etc.) but I have helped to debug code in a very small way. It feels satisfying, but it's hard to say why. I think helping to create anything positive / fun is like that ...

Personally I like the idea of hackers and wish more people would sign up to their ethic.

I usually test distros and KDE development releases. I have KDE, Fedora Core and openSUSE bugzilla accounts. I have also reported bugs or fixed them on some apps although I am not much of a programmer.

Also there are other ways to contribute besides code (for those of us that suck or can't code). Documentation, art work, filing bug reports, answering questions (mailing list, irc, forums ) are all important and useful. Not all of use were meant to write code, but all of us can do our little bit.

    Very right sir,

I agree with you that one who is an open source supporter must give something back to the community which has been trying hard to stand on its two feet for some time now. Exchange of ideas is a great way of sharing the best of knowledge that is available in abundance around the world. I have also taken some inspiration from you guys here on the forum and trying hard to learn as much as I can. I just started learning Linux almost 6 months ago and with whatever little time I have on my hands, I just try to do something on Linux which I would normally do on my Windows pc and figure out how it could be accomplished. Thanks a lot and you are a credit to the community here.
