If the kinds of people who watch the Indianapolis 500 are the same type of people who watch NASCAR, is this really the demographic we should all be shooting for? Think about it.

I agree with techieMoe, if we're gona get the word of Linux out there, we need to get it to people who actually use computers.

That's not true, just visit Florida, everyone here has a mullet (or a MIT, Mullet In Training)!

I agree with TM on this one! These are not the type of people that use computer in a way that would care if their computer was installed with Windows or Linux. This would be true for almost any motorsport though! I mean, I'm a big F1 fan but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say people like me are rare. Not to mention there's a huge rivalry between the different motorsports, mainly NASCAR, Indy, Cart, F1, WRC, etc... (I watch F1 and WRC and hate anything that has an oval track for example). So really, how do you pick one? Just do like these guys and say "I watch Indy, so lets market it there"? I'm also going to bet that most people that donated are really Indy 500 fans, or were even thinking about watching it before Tux500.com came along.

Anyway, enough of me!

It's highschool, nerds and jocks, sports and Linux. We should be aiming at the fairly tech savy.

I agree with most of you, this isn't the greatest way to drum up support for Linux, that's why I said I didn't think this was the way to "make Linux a household name". But on the other hand, I myself am a Motor sport fan and I use Linux too, maybe these guys know something we don't. Maybe they are really aiming for the children of Motor sport lovers. The 13 to 17 year olds?

just because someone's a racing fan doesn't mean they're not a computer user. i watch and play football and go to the gym. does that make me incompetent with linux?

on a side note, what is the point in oval racing? not to start a flamewar but it seems to be all about who can build the fastest car =/

Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

Or maybe the US should not be so focussed on getting this message over? Does anyone realise that nobody outside of the USA is interested in the indy-500-driving-in-a-circle-race?

Now there was some Formula-1 on this weekend too, which has more global appeal.

Blimey, I'm shocked! techieMoe, has your account been cracked? Just because these people like beer and sunshine, it doesn't mean they've not got computers...

Oh, I don't doubt that quite a few of them have a computer, with Microsoft Windows on it. I don't doubt that every single one of them knows how to turn it on too. What I most certainly doubt is whether any of them are interested in running Linux on it.

no such thing as bad PR anything would help. I didnt know indy didnt get played anywhere else because i dont watch nascar indy or formula 1. I just dont have that kind of time to sit for 3 or 4 hours and watch cars driving around a track. Plus I'd rather be out flying my RC Planes when the weather is nice.
