Know what you want. Plan your goal. Do you want to be able to write your own programs? Do you want to build a network? Or do you want a cooler multi media platform than your friends have? Show your 3D desktop via the beamer while playing a DVD? Or do you need it for writing letters and email?
These goals are different, and need different paths to reach.

My advice is to start off with a really easy distro like Ubuntu. Work with it, familiarize yourself with it, get to know it inside and out which will take time. Once you feel like you really have a good handle on Ubuntu, move on to a distro that's a little more challenging like CentOS or Fedora Core. Continue the process until you are running Linux from Scratch or Crux which will teach you much.
Don't try this journey without the three Ps... Patience, persistence and perseverance. Good luck.
