    What exactly is the use of a proxy?

    Many linux users set up home proxies and the like. I know that proxies over the web is mostly used for anonymity, however can someone please explain the use of a proxy in your own home...will your hostname still be the same and what do you folks use it for?

    There are lots of uses, I would use it to restrict some webpages, stop some P2P my brothers uses that make my APT and Portage downloads go really slowly, and I'm not sure but I believe you can also use one to limit bandwidht on determinate IPs.

    Squid (Internet Object Cache) reduces bandwith and makes the Internet Faster. Some proxies are for content filters like N2H2's Bess. Some are for logging. Some can be used for QoS, which limits bandwidth.
