I guess I'll start with what I would recommend:
1. "Easy Linux Commands" by Jon Emmons and Terry Clark. I just got this a couple weeks ago, and it's really helped me out a lot. It's not too thick, and covers the basic shell commands. I really like it.
1. "Ubuntu Linux Bible" by William von Hagen. This thing is huge, but it covers most of what I can use in Ubuntu. It's almost too big, and some things like sound card problems are not found easily. But it covers basic stuff pretty well.Dan

Books might work for some people, but I just cant justify spending money on a resource that is written much better online (in such places as this forum).
And on top of that, if something dosnt work, you can't ask the book a question and expect a response :PLiving the digital dream....

There's been lots of threads devoted to this subject. A couple of them are here and here.
As for my own recommendations, I like Linux in a Nutshell.

The Linux Cookbook is a great resource for users that are just starting, it will solve most of your questions easily and friendly, it's a bit outdate in some parts (like configuration files and such) but it's still applicable
