I've been using Linux+ study guide third edition by Roderick W. Smith for a few months now and i've found it to be a very efficient way of learning the basics. far better than trawling the internet for half ass tutorials.

There's lots of good resources available online, it just takes some digging to find the good ones. If you like to have something in your hands though, like I do, I've always found Linux In a Nutshell to be useful. O'Reilly books are a good source. It's not distro-specific but there's lots of information available on commands, services, file systems, etc.
