I also had a recent washer/dryer "event" -- I guess (by some definition) you could say I "hacked" it...
While moving my washer and dryer into a house I managed to break two (that's right - not just one, but two
) of the knobs/shafts on the control panel. So, after thinking about it for a day or so (and moving other things into the house), I decided what I would do --- I got my 'DREMEL High-Speed Rotary Tool' and a small drill bit - and cut a small slot in each shaft (sheared off in an almost-clean-cut-break at the face of the panel/switch) just big enough for a small flat-bladed screwdriver to fit into.
A [temporary?/permanent?] solution that works!

In high school I purchased high-end headlights for my beloved '98 Audi A4. The glow of the headlights was absolutely beautiful - but I couldn't stand the amber glow of the parking lights that sat right next to the headlights. I did some research and learned that the wire going to the parking lights (which also acted as the turn signals) had two tips. A signal from the first tip made the amber bulb blink for the turn signal, and a signal from the second tip made it stay on for the parking light. So to solve my "problem" I simply covered the 2nd tip with electrical tape, killing the signal for parking lights. From then on whenever I turned on my headlights the amber glow was gone, only the beautiful white glow of my headlights. The turn signal, however, still worked. Needless to say I was more than pleased at the time =)

Anyone know how to hack a Ford Focus so that it doesn't beep at me when I put the key in the ignition without fastening my seat belt?
I know it's a small thing, but it always irritates me when I'm at my weakest -- first thing in the morning before my first coffee!!

Saving the 8-track
back in high school, I had this really nerdy buddy of mine. we used to go garage sale hopping and dumpster diving all of the time to try and find bike parts, random electronics, general cool stuff to mess around with in our "lab" we'd set up. One thing that we'd always noticed is that almost every garage sale had a bin full to the top of 8-track tapes. while breezing through we realized that these tapes all contained some of the hardest to find classic rock and roll and disco. solid gold music you can't find anywhere (mind you this was pre-internet downloading, old school). So somehow this simple fascination turned into my freinds personal quest to single handedly "Save the 8-track." I'm still not quite sure HOW he did it, but he managed to successfully hardwire a beat up old car 8-track player into his computer and start recording and converting the files and saving them to disc. He must have had hundreds of floppy's full of data just laying around waiting (he was actually WAITING for the technology to make CD's at home to become availible!) I haven't seen him in years, so I don't know if he followed through on this. but that's the story of my freind who hacked the 8-track!
