Cool Sourceforge replacement I have written

    Hi All

My name is Tim, and I just wanted to tell you all about a site that I have made called ShareSource. Basically, it is like Sourceforge, but a lot easier to use, and also almost-ad-free.

It has been tested in and out, however, there could still be a few kinks in there.

If you want to try the site out, just point your browser to ShareSource | Welcome

I'd just like to ask why write a competitor to one of the best known open source sites? How are you going to be getting yourself noticed on the web so people come to you, and what can you offer over sourceforge to pursuade people to go to you rather than them?

If i was a developer of a site, i wouldn't want to be putting something on your site, and sourceforge as it's multiple sites to develop and maintain, and also on the other hand as a user, i'd rather everything went onto one site rather than having to search 3 or 4 different sites for what i want. Not trying to put you off at all, just wondering why make a site to do a job that there's a perfectly good site out there already.

BTW: Dont get me wrong here, I hope this does/can work out for you, just throwing up some questions as to why you would want to create a copy of something that's already in existence and works fine IMO.

Hello. I wrote a competitor to one of the best known open source sites because I did not like the way that Sourceforge was laid out. I believe that Sourceforge is unclean, and really just plain annoying at some times.

How are you going to be getting noticed on the web? Well, like this, this is the only way! Telling people on forums and IRC so people come to ShareSource.

I can offer people many things over Sourceforge, especially some of the things that they have taken away to "cut costs". One of these such things is a service that is in development now that will bring back the compile farm to Open Source developers. This and the fact that ShareSource is practically ad-free I will hope will get every man, his wife, his dog and his cat using ShareSource.

I am very compassionate about ShareSource, and in a strange kind of way, I feel that this is the way that I can change the world.

With ShareSource, I have made it simple to report bugs, view screenshots and perform other project oriented functions.

I don't have to have every open source project on ShareSource, but ShareSource is there for another choice. Why have KDE, Gnome and XFCE? Why not only have one? The answer? CHOICE!.

ShareSource looks good, and is easy to use. Yes, it does lack some major functions that Sourceforge has, and over time I hope to bridge this gap.

Overall I am saying, if you as a developer want to use GNOME, that is fine, but I like KDE. You want to use Sourceforge? Great! But keep me to my (open source) ShareSource, and I can bask in the glory of having a simple to use system where not only developers and "people in the know" can report bugs, but where common people like my Gran can too.

I do really like the look of your site. Its rather inviting and easy to navigate in comparison.

As far as most open source advocates are concerned, thats not so much what they are looking for (content being the key) but in your sites early developmental stages something like that could make for a good hook.

I agree that dividing things between the two sites is a nuisance, but at the same time I see that open source in general is scattered and separated already. Whats one more division?

I'm kinda curious to see how this goes. And what the hell, pm me if you could use a hand. I'm always looking for something to do in my spare time.

Well source forge is good, but I can't imagine they want to manage EVERY open source project there is, spread the load.

I don't want to be the person who competes against Sourceforge or any other similar site, I just want to bring new and abandoned features that will be or were loved. There is lots in store for ShareSource

Sourceforge doesn't do a huge amount of "management" I wouldn't think since each project's site is maintained by it's developers. Their management will be keeping the underlying infrastructure running smoothly, and since they have what seem to be 3rd party mirrors which you always seem to use, sourceforge themselves probably dont have a lot to do (unless they manage *A* server at the places where the mirrors are located, which is probable i'd say).

And I guess also it was some sort of a challenge. I mean, why do we climb mountains?

By manage I didn't mean the project, I meant that they have to deal with all the maintainence of the site and bandwidth and stuff.

I was a bit cynical when you first mentioned it but it looks really well. Good luck with the project
