After getting fed up with Planeshift, because they claim to be a revolutionary open source project when in fact the development itself is quite secretive and closed, I started searching for something else. What I found was Regnum Online, an MMORPG from Argentina which is also available in english, has a fair amount of english-speaking players and recently came up with a linux port. The game is not an open source project but development is community driven (which planeshift claims to be also but I say bullcrap), it is free to play but has premium content that isn't necessary to enjoy the game as a whole.

So far I'm saving my time and money and staying away from MMO's in general... I get hooked far too easily.

Yeah, me too. I played Travian for a long time though. The gentle art of writing treat letters had an appeal to me *evil grin*

The closest thing to an MMO I've ever played for an extended period of time was probably Diablo 2 on Battle.Net. I just prefer single-player or local multi-player games. If I'm going to be called a ***** or be cursed in leet-speek I want to be able to turn around and hit the guy who said it. Even if it's with a large foam sword. (Ah, college memories.)

I'm personally on WoW these days. I've been playing MMOs for years (hell, I must have started my first one, Dark Ages, when I was like 10 or 11), and I've never really gotten addicted, so I think I'm safe . I hate the l33t dudes as much as anyone else, which is why I play RP servers (where the level of douchebaggery tends to be at least a bit lower). And of course, play Horde and stay out of the Barrens .

    Used to play Ultima Online...

I used to play Ultima Online but became quite disgruntled when they began changing the entire game. There used to be only mages, fighters (swordsmen, mace fighters... etc.)... you could be a musician (bard) if you wanted and use that skill in fighting monsters. Then Ultima Online added Ninjas to the game and started nerfing everyone. Then they added armor and weapons to the game that allowed someone who's been playing for a day or two to completely destroy very high leveled players. I played a 15 day free trial to show a friend of mine the game and it's become an even worse game!

I liked Ultima Online because you could mix any skills and didn't have to choose a race that defined you to one type of skill or set of spells. Plus depending on the mixture of the skills you had, you could do certain things better or have a different effect with the spells you casted or items you created.

I used to play in a few MUDs now and then also. None that I really stuck to. Just ones that I would be interested in for a few months at a time.

Right now though the best MMORPG I have found is World of Warcraft. PvP is not very good from what I've seen so far but I'm only LvL 22 and haven't seen a lot yet, only high LvL players coming to gank low LvL players. All together though, this is the best MMORPG I know of that is still running with a good following. I BETA tested Neocron and loved it but it didn't really hit it off after BETA testing. I think it was the first, or one of the first FPS MMORPGs out there. I played it because it was an FPS. It was probably the best MMORPG I've ever played! I will probably try it out again sometime soon. Maybe there is a better following now.
