Hello Linux
Hi, I'm posting on the Linux Newbie forum, so I am obviously a newbie. I have read a lot, some of it has been useful. Some of it has been over my head. I read the article for newbies about the differences between Windows and Linux, I don't really fall into either of the categories outlined by that article. I neither want Linux for Linux, nor do I want it as an alternative to Windows. It has been decreed by my PERL professor that all work must be done in Linux, so I really have no choice but to learn. I'm not closed minded towards this new OS, but it's very alien to me. I've tried fiddling around with it at school, there I can write and run PERL scripts. The PCs there are dual boot, Windows XP and SuSe Linux.
Anyways, I reckon the only way I can truly learn and know Linux is to use Linux. I have decided to try a little experiment. My eventual goal is to make my laptop dual boot, and use Linux for daily computing tasks as much as possible. I want to use it for internet, word processing, PERL scripting, and possibly C coding. I'm not going to try to run media or games, as that is outside of the context of my little "adventure".
So far, besides hours of reading, I have downloaded and burned a live CD of Ubuntu. I have been successful in getting the OS to boot, but that's about it. For the time being, I would just like to get an internet connection through Linux so I can STFW for info without having to reboot to XP. I guess I'll just keep reading as much as I can.
So there you go, my big hello to the Linux world!

People being forced to use Linux? Has the table turned? There is some irony in that

Say hi to your professor from me, and tell him he can't force people to be free (ah heck, it may be just an OS, but it's also a choice). Can't tell an OS by it's GUI

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thanks for your warm welcomes! This place seems alot more laid back than some of the articles I read led me to believe it would be.
Anyways, my professor gives this reasoning for his Linux requirement. He says he uses Windows at home and Linux at work. All of us in his PERL class are in one of two majors: network administration or network security. He says with this kind of major, encountering Linux and/or UNIX is a definate. I also have UNIX and Linux classes coming down the pipe at some point, so I guess there's no escaping those little penguins!
And about my internet connection. I'm on a laptop with wireless hooked to cable. Don't help me yet, I think with enough time and patience I can figure this out on my own. I'll learn more that way. I'm sure you guys will be seeing me around here though, as I'm sure I will have questions.
