Well my birthday is coming up and the wife asked me what I wanted. I did not really think about it and could not give her an answer.
So my adventure started yesterday, looking for a really cool gadget (who doesn't like gadgets) when I came across openmoko, youtube.
I got so excited thinking about the thousands of software that would eventually be available and being able to easily hack it (not much of a hacker but i try). the only problem is that it will be available after my birthday. Maybe I should tell her to hold off on the gift

Yeah it's great. I'd certainly like one. In the meantime have you seen that the Nokia N770 has dropped down seriously in price? It runs Debian and a modified Gnome Desktop. I can get them in Ireland for ~€120 ($150??) with a 1GB memory card. Sweet. It's a internet tablet with WifI, Bluetooth, 800x600 touchscreen...
Give it a google. Pretty cool for playing with. Also check out the maemo section on gnome-look.org - the geek in me really likes the LCARS theme.

yeah the Nokia N770 has really droped in price and I was considering getting one, but how functional is it? Can you install linux software on it easily?
The Openmoko Neo 1973 will have a reposotory for both supported and community driven apps. Does the N770 have anything simillar?Registered Linux user # 395739

I believe it has repos. I wonder if you can just use Debian repos for that architecture? Either way I did a bit of reading and on wikipedia there were a few criticisms. I would love to get an openmoko. Mmmmmmm

The two biggest problems for me with the 770 after further reading is that it uses rs-mmc rather than something obvious like mini or micro SD and that it only supports upto 2GB expansion. Now if I knew that down the road I could have a 16GB expansion when they become available (cheaply) that would make a sweet PMP.

Reminds me of Trolltech's Greenphone. Is that at all like the Openmoko Neo?

I'm not sure if it is like the greenphone but it is a lot cheaper. There is the sharp zaurus that ran qtopia but it seems to have disappaired.
