I have been looking at joining the British Computer Society (BCS) and I've been trying to find out what other people think of the idea.

Is anyone else a member of their local professional organisation, and if so do you think it is worth it? I'd also be interested in people who have looked at it and decided not to for whatever reason, and what people in other countries would make of my BCS membership if I ever tried to work there.

From what I can tell, there is a certain amount of getting out of it what you put into it, but it doesn't seem to have a big effect when convincing anyone else of your abilities.
