The KDE GUI is not primitive, is a very well developed and easy to use GUI IMO, Kcontrol at least is very complex! And I don't want to begin with YaST
You don't need to use a batch of CDs to install software, you can also download and install from the internet, and if you want you can download in DVD instead of CDs
I stream media in commercial formats all the time using mplayerplug-in. Mp3 is not copyright protected but the format itself (not the content) is patented instead. Installing support for Mp3 is as easy as double clicking the Mp3 file and clicking YES when the prompt appears
If you need Windows, use windows. Nobody is forcing you to use Linux

I have never had a problem using MS Office document on OpenOffice, they look just fine here. Go ahead !
After more than a year of being a Linux user, I must say 1 thing:
Linux is lightyears ahead to Windows! It just cannot match the speed of the development of different distro's. I don't know how big losses has MS with Vista but I guess it may be more than 10 billion US$. So go ahead with Linux!

I just want to say thanks for all of the advice in getting started! I am now dual booting with Fedora Core (What a learning process that was!) and I'm going through all of the Python tutorials I can find (I'm pretty stoked, learning programming is turning out to be way easier than I thought it would be!), and I'm taking an HTML class next quarter as well.
this site How To Become A Hacker has proven absolutely invaluable! thanks for the advice. all the gurus on this forum are officially my role models.

P.S. I'm really suprised this post lasted this long as well.
