Mobile musings during coffee
I've just grabbed a cup of coffee, and I'm letting this whole matter sink in...
Here's the thing. My contract with my mobile phone provider has ended, so I'm up for renewal. I can get a good deal on a sim-only contract. Or I can opt for getting a new phone and keep the same monthly cost.
Now I have a vision of a phone that automatically syncs it's agenda with my Linux-box through a bluetooth connection. I can probably write a script to that purpose myself... I've already written a script locking my lappy when I go further than 2 meters from it, and automatically unlocking when I come within 1 meter. No real use, but it gives me some confidence.
But you've guessed it. I know next to nothing about mobile phones. And unarmed with any knowledge, I'm just gonna let the sales person sell me some outdated device with mediocre features and compatibility problems. I have been searching, but the language of mobile phone hard- and software is foreign to me. Only to find out the difference between a PDA and a smartphone exceeded my capabilities.
It reminded me of a fortune cookie I once got. Something like:
The top three treats to any system are:
3) A technician with a patch
2) A programmer with a soldering iron
1) A user with an idea
Now I may still fall in the last category, but if anyone could give me some pointers. What to look for in a phone, so I can get a connection through bluetooth, mount it within my filesystem (just for the fun of being able to do so), and sync it's agenda with the one on my lappy.
Maybe all of them can, maybe only some, maybe there is a keyword to look for (i.e. any phone that's complies to the <<Xcc-324xxrc.3434i-2.4 ED standard>>, or any other complicated string that scans as 'just a random string' to someone like me).
Now I know some very good hardware vendors whom I trust to provide me with service and wont let me walk out the store with something I'm not perfectly happy with. Alas, the phone company is not amongst them. My experience is that if I'm not specific about what I want, they just give me something they have dusting away in the back.
So, having finished my coffee and no time left to shorten this post
Can someone arm me with prudent advice? Can't tell an OS by it's GUI
