I find light text on a dark background very hard to read and quite tiring on the eyes. For window decorations I have no real preference but for the actual window itself light all the way.

Well, if you're screen is dark, it's harder to see. That's why you have to get closer or squint or focus harder. It's more of a strain on the eyes, same with small text. The strain is caused by focusing, not so much by the brightness.
At work where there the room is all lit up I use a lighter theme (although the IT dept is a lot darker than all other dept's). At home where I have the room dark and little light I go with the darker theme.
