I can't tell you what's different about Aliens directors cut...
But it makes a difference! Like watching LOTR regular, then extended editions.
Agreed re. director's cuts. The extended DC version of Blade Runner was just plain awesome! And there were two or three different endings that you could see. They showed the "sugared" ending in theaters, of course! :-)
What was cut from Aliens was essential to the story in my opinion! If and when you see the director's cut of Aliens
you will notice the missing scenes at once and probably get quite upset like I did!
I've started to show a real preference to the Director's Cut on almost every film I've seen.
Given the choice, I'd say that's the way to go.
I had already seen Avatar in 2D a couple of times, but watched it in 3D (Blu-ray) last night and found it to be better than anticipated:
IMDb - Avatar (2009)
They didn't go overboard with 3D special effects that would have detracted from the storyline, and the visuals and soundtrack were fantastic. Those Ikran (mountain banshees) look like they'd be a hoot to fly around on.
Yes, the plot is somewhat predictable, but otherwise the movie is lots of fun and well worth watching again.
We saw Avatar in 3d at the local theater when it came out - definitely worth the $$ :-) First time I had to duck when something came flying out of the screen at me! I've recently watched it in 2d on my HD computer monitor, and while it was really good, the 3d version just has that "something extra". We also saw Hugo recently in 3d, and that was good also. However, I have to believe that these 3d rehashes of old 2d classics (such as Beauty and the Beast from Disney) are probably not worth the price. If the movie wasn't filmed in 3d in the first place, they have to just be faking it!
and speaking of 3D, i for one have no intention of watching TPM in 3D. i prefer to watch it the way George Lucas originally intended for me to be disappointed by it.
Here are a couple of links covering "real vs fake" 3D movies that have been released:

Watched Drive Angry last night. 2D, not 3D.
Great action comedy. I think my favorite character was The Accountant.
A sarcastic smart-ass in every sense of the word!:p:cool::p
