I just got etch installed on my new laptop and for some reason, X doesn't want to load. So, I took a look at xorg.conf, and switched it so it uses the vesa driver instead of the nv one. Then I rebooted and froze up on a blank black screen. So, I switched it back. Then I downloaded the nvidia drivers and wanted to install them, but the require a precompiled frontend based on the distribution. It gave me two different choices: download it or build it. Well, I would have downloaded it, except that machine can't find/initialize the ethernet card on there. So, I was stuck building it. Except I couldn't because the gcc compiler wasn't installed. Now, I just needed to install it, it should be on the first dvd, right? Well, I really don't know how to mount a dvd drive, however it does recognize there's one there(/dev/disk/by-id).
So, to wrap up, one of three things would need to happen to get this to work:
1) Download the nvidia frontend on a different machine and use that
2) Get my DVD drive recognized, so I can install gcc and build it manually
3) Get X working by using the vesa driver.
Here's some hopefully useful diagnostic info from xorg.0.log and dmesg:
