trying to install debian 4 from a netinstall cdrom on my new pc - this worked perfectly on my last pc.
starts ok, loads image, goes thru screens for language, keyboard and then asks me to load floppy with cdrom drivers or alternatively to select from a list of cdrom drivers.

My two dvd/cdrom drives are SATA - I'm wondering if this is the problem, and if so is there a way round it?
Any help please?

kept searching and found what appears to be a matching Debian bug (40025. However, the way round it which worked for the bug finder wont work for me
- say NO to floppy
- say yes to select from list of drivers
- select NONE from the list
- set mount for cd-rom as /dev/cdroms/cdrom0
Fails, could not mount.

I downloaded fresh netinstall image since mine was 2 months old - no difference.

Install keeps bombing out saying found no common cd-rom.

Try downloading a lenny netinst cd if you don't mind using a testing distribution, it might have the support you're looking for

I also tried the cd1 ISO - same problem.
tried booting with noapic nolapic - no good.

My new pc will install ubuntu 7.10, fedora 8, vista and xp.
I seem to have a similar issue trying to install PCLinuxOS - fails on the cdrom shortly after starting.

My guess is that this is a kernel issue (based on bug 400025.

re your suggestion to use lenny:
I'm not "close enough to the metal" to start messing around. I stand a good chance of messing things up and creating more issues.

I will hold off on Debian until I see a new release coming out. Pity - I wanted to set it up again and make some serious use of it.

I was too hasty with my earlier reply.
I took your advice and downloaded lenny netinstall.
problem is fixed in lenny, installation went without a hitch.
this posting is being done from lenny.

No doubt I will have some issues with wireless, multimedia etc but the base is installed and looks impressive.

I got SATA DVD-ROM and it worked with lenny as well as with etch !!! More surprisingly even windows XP is able to boot from it)))

If I try to mount either of cdrom cdrw dvd or dvdrw, they all refer to IDE device. I don't even have an idea where to look for SATA one

And another (I hope, related) question. When Debian detects ports during loading, it finds three SATA ports (there are four of them in total and two of them are disabled at BIOS). The problem is that SATA3 port does not respond and it takes more than a minute for Debian to test it. So I was wondering if I can skip this port testing in anyway. Both devices work fine under Windows XP.

Well... to add, it seems that problem is even deeper. When Debian is detecting sata ports it returns the following:

ata2 SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)

It may be worth having a look at the debian bugs Debian bug tracking system
There are a number of them relating to cdroms.
My problem specifically seems to match bug 400258 - installation starts, I tell it which keyboard, language etc, then if fails because it can find no common cdrom. This bug has been fixed in Lenny and I have loaded Lenny with no problem whatever.
