There are several ways to install programs in Debian.
(1) Synaptic Package Manger
System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager

(2) Aptitude

(3) Apt-get

If you are just getting started with Debian, I would recommend using Synaptic but Apt-get and Aptitude are prefered by debian users.
