Killing the X Server
I am trying to kill the X server at the login screen. It flashes to the console, but then X boots back up after half a second. How would I prevent it from doing that?

Press Alt+Ctrl+F1. It will drop you at command line mode. Log in as Regular User and execute this
Code:
su -
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
Above code will stop X Server. Execute this to restart it :
Code:
su -
/etc/init.d/gdm start

why would you log in as a regular user and then su - ?

Its not a good idea to log in as root user. One should as Regular user only and gain root privileges using su - whenever required.

Which code didn't work? Does Alt+Ctrl+F1-F6 drop you at command line prompt?

Didn't try alt+ctrl+F1+F6, only tried alt+ctrl+F1 as you said above.
