Debian so big?

Hi

I wanted to download the newest distribution of Debian, but the download site linked me to a folder where I could either download 5 DVDs or 31 CDs...
Thats quite big, isn't it?

Is there any smaller version, which can fit on my hard disk without taking 99% of the space?

Download only the first CD or DVD. In the link Downloading Debian CD/DVD images via HTTP/FTP
it mentions that The first CD/DVD disk contains all the files necessary to install a standard Debian system.

Send a message via MSN to geniuz
You should go to:
ftp://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian-cd/current/i386/iso-cd/
and scroll down until you find an entry with ..-netinst.iso which is about 160 MB....it expects you have a working internet connection during the install though, as it will download all the packages true FTP...

Also be sure to check out the businesscard install CD. It's really small and quick to install from.

Yes it is
If you had enough HD space and wanted to, you could burn it do a Blu-ray (or HDDVD), if you could find a program that burns ISO's to HDDVD/Blu-ray

A normal install will take around 4-5GB of disk space. You won't be installing every package on every disc. Debian puts the most popular software on the first couple of CDs or the first DVD. The software on the other discs is more obscure and you'll likely not want to install it.
