hi i just installed debian etch. my sound doesn't work. i know the sound card and the speakers are functional because they work on my windows partition. when i click on the volume control that is X-ed out i get the following error: "no volume control gstreamer plugins and/or devices found"

i think my audio card uses nforce drivers...

what do i do to get this working?

Please post the

lspci

to see what chipset your sound card use and

hwinfo --sound

and to see what version of alsa are you using:

cat /proc/asound/version

Is your motherboard is NF61S? Read this.

if you haven't alsa you need install it
aptitude install alsa alsa-base alsa-utils

any change?

Might add to unmute everything afterwards by running "alsamixer" in console

I agree, you need to run "alsaconf". Debian doesn't run it by default. If you don't have it installed, you'll need to install the alsa packages.

Everything should be unmuted by default, at least, mine always is.

okay so i checked for the packages and i have all that you have noted. i ran alsaconf and it searched for my sound cards automatically. when it was done, it said "no supported pnp or pci card found"
"would you like to probe isa sound card/chips?"
i chose yes and then it gave me a warning:
"probing legacy isa cards might make your system unstable"
so i chose "no" since i had no idea if this was a good or a bad idea.
what is your guys' input?

I am facing the same problem with my system.

I can hear the beeps (sounded as a warning, say, by gvim editor and
at the terminal) though!
