maybe you can try a way around KDM, just uninstall it completely:
apt-get --purge remove kdm

You might have to install kde again:
apt-get install kde-core

Now you should modify/create a file in your home directory called:
".xinitrc"

so do:
nano ~/.xinitrc

if the file is empty, enter the following line:
"exec startkde"

now you should reboot and login the console.

first command to issue is:
startx

Do one more thing :

dpkg-reconfigure gdm

Select KDE in Session Tab. Does KDE Session start?

Command not found: dpkg-reconfigure
GNOME still starts up normally
