Can't start the X Windows :-(

Hi all,

I downloaded the new Debian Installer version (3.1), later I can install the base system and then base config running, I choose install the Desktop Environment and other DNS Server ... etc. And it downloaded 5xxMB files from the FTP.

But ... later, after I config the X Config, I don't know what part of wrong, after back to the console, I enter "startx", a very quickly text fresh, later, it tell me something Error, so the X Windows can't start, I don't understand the text tell me what is wrong, so I post the log file here.

My system:
Asus A7V133-C MB
768MB PC133 SDRAM
Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440 with 64MB RAM
Sony SDM-HS73 LCD

P.S. I am newbie in Debian

here are the /var/log/XFree86.0.log content, who can teach me how to reconfig XFree 86 again, need enter what command in the console?

Have no idea myself, but did a www.google.com/linux search for 'Unable to find a valid framebuffer device' and some party got the thing working by getting rid of 'udev' http://www.kroah.com/linux/talks/ols...an-OLS2003.pdf I think.

Hope helps.

nvidia

its simple. you aint got graphics driver. i guess you got nvidia card. me too. its ****ing annoying. ill tell you my how ive solved this problem. first, compile new kernel, here http://www.desktop-linux.net/debkernel.htm and at the end author writes about nvidia driver. just do as he say. one warning, at debian install (from cds) choose bf2.4 and then set in networking options your ip, dns, dhcp and so on and in /etc/apt-get/apt.sources change "stable" to "unstable" (not at debian security), then do "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade" because you need the latest packages to succesfully compile the newest kernel. post your questins here. thats it! bye

It shouldn't be a graphix driver problem....

Here are some common mistakes by newbies to Debian, or any distribution of Linux really. 4.3 is a development release of X-Windows, this means there could be a lot of bugs in the program. Here is how you tell if the version is development or not, the first number (4), is the major release number, the second number (3), is the minor release number. Now, if the second number is odd, this means the program release is a development version. However, if the second number is even, the program is production stable; this means less problems.

I suggest that you start from scratch, download a minimalist Debian 3.0 ISO from ftp://www.debian.org, and do a fresh install from the web; provided you have an internet connection. Remember, when you are selecting your packages (i.e. programs) to install, make sure you go with the production versions of each one. X-Free86 4.4 is the latest stable version of x86, and the latest stable kernel release is 2.6.8.

If you truly are a newbie to Debian, I suggest that you keep a copy of your old distro. on a seperate partition, and do a dual boot system using LILO. If you are a Linux novice, and need more in depth information, here is a good site for you.

Rather than berating this poor fellow about his brand of video card or distribution, I offer a very simple solution to get the card to work.

First get the nvidia drivers. With Debian this can be done by simply logging in as root and typing:

Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install nvidia-glx
apt-get install nvidia-kernel
Then restart. Now log in as root again and change 3 lines in this file with a text editor:

Code:
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Make sure that there is a "#" at the beginning of the line in front of the lines that say:

Load "GLCore"
Load "DRI"

They should look like this when you're done:

Code:
# Load "GLCore"
# Load "DRI"
If Load "DRI" isn't there that's ok. Judging from the output you gave me, though, I *know* you're loading GLCore. Also make sure there is a line just below those that says:

Code:
Load "glx"
Then scroll down to a the section called "Device" that has the name of your video card. Change the "nv" driver to say "nvidia". The line should look like this:

Code:
Driver "nvidia"
Then save, restart, and you should have a functioning X Windows system.

Send a message via ICQ to chealer
I believe I experienced a similar problem myself and would like to mention a few things. I got a GeForce TI 4600 about 2 weeks ago which I took many hours to get working on my Debian Sarge 20040612 snapshot. Yesterday my uptime was 13 days and I had to reboot the PC, and then X didn't want to start anymore. After some time I remembered that I was recommended by a Debian desktop page to install package udev for autodetection of devices. Since I couldn't figure out what else could be wrong, I uninstalled it, rebooted and saw X work again. If I reinstall udev, X doesn't start anymore, and if I uninstall it again it works again. The problem is that I had absolutely no suspicion that installing udev could cause this, so it took me several hours to realize this was the problem.

I checked quickly the Debian udev bug reports but didn't find anything about that (although I don't know udev much neither).

http://linuxfr.org/~phpgml/10980.html is another topic I found that mentions the udev + nvidia problem.

The URL pointed to by lugoteehalt seems to be just a general document about udev that doesn't seem helpful with this problem.
ComPoet's comment is a bit odd because XFree86 4.3.0.1 is the most up-to-date on Debian Sarge.

(EE) Unable to find a valid framebuffer device

The framebuffer (FB) device (Dev) is asked by the option "UseFBDev".
> * If I don't use the option "UseFBDev", the error disappears and X work.
put an # before these option in xorg.conf or Xfree86.conf.
But make a copy before to keep always the first version.

see the link where i found this tip:
