I got a problem with the server I'm hosted on. Friend who owns it is on holiday (vacation).

For some reasons the server changed its file system today at 4 am (I think). It's now mounted as Read-only file system. I don't know much about Linux. Can anyone tell me what to do to change it back to "normal"?

rootserver:/# apachectl restart
/usr/sbin/apachectl restart: httpd not running, trying to start
fopen: Read-only file system
apache: could not open error log file /var/log/apache/error.log.
/usr/sbin/apachectl restart: httpd could not be started

P.S. I got root access...

Sounds like a permissions thing, are you running the "apachectl restart" command logged on as root? If not run this command:

su - -c 'apachectl restart'

It will ask for the root password (unless you're root), and then run the command as root.

It's not a "permission thing". I can't even create a dir when logged on as root:

rootserver:/# mkdir test
mkdir: cannot create directory `test': Read-only file system

check the /etc/fstab to see if it is mounted read only (ro)

I figured something was/is wrong with the hdd and the system was set to mount the file system as read-only in this case.

Probably the hard disk are being damaged. In case of disk error automatically the hd was mounted like Only read mode.

Reboot and try fsck without mount any partition.

Hi,

I'm requesting you to please reboot the box and at startup type the command "fsck".

This will help u out from the Read Only File systems.

Probably this will check 5 Phases.

1.Bloack , Inodes 2. Directory structure 3.Directory Connectivity 4.Groups and So on .....
