3. I can load it on a customer's Winblows machine and show them "You bet there is life after Winblows", and be able to load it on the spot for them! | bingo |

| Re: Which of these Debian Based Distros ? Yoper is not a debian based distro!
It has apt-get and synaptics but it is actually a ported apt-rpm from Fedora.
Still it is a nice and quite newbie-friendly distro (most of the thing u'll need are preinstalled) and very fast, but the problem is: does it have a future? Right not it's still pretty uncertain, so I'd recommend Mepis if you like KDE or Ubuntu if you like Gnome better. |

Well thank you, I stand corrected, I had seen somewhere in my many readings that Yoper was a Dedian based distro, must of used my good eye. Now it is my turn; From the Yoper web site the following:
1. The base system is built from scratch.
2. Packagetools come from Slackware (installpkg, removepkg).
3. Raidtools from Red Hat.
4. Kudzu Hardware recognition from Red Hat.
5. Startup scripts from Red Hat.
6. Mozilla from Netscape Ltd.
7. OpenOffice from Sun.
8. Hwsetup from Knoppix
9. Sax2, Yast2 from SuSE
10. KDE 3.3.
11. Apt tools from Debian
12. Synaptic from Connectiva. |

It's a mixture of a few popular distros , and its the fastest I ever tried.
Yes the question is is there FUTURE? |

| Ubuntu I would say for a nOOb, I think that Ubuntu is the best. The average person who tries linux, think that GNOME is easy to use. And Ubuntu just works, and has great support. So I think the best choice for you is Ubuntu

I think I can say with some authority that SuSE is just as useful to a power user as Slackware/Debian/BSD. I've used and enjoyed Slackware and Debian, but I don't see SuSE as any less "in-depth" than either of them, except perhaps if by "in-depth" you mean "takes more work to configure". They do, but I don't see SuSE being easier to configure as a necessarily bad thing. | I didn't mean to offend my favorite Techie.
(You know me I am still a little bitter about the 9.1 personal gcc thing) I know I will get a life and get over it someday, I am just having so much fun with slackware hehe.
Still buds??? |

~Alan | I generally try not to say "XXX distro is best for you" because in most cases, only the person seeking the distro is qualified to make that statement. I would *not* recommend Ubuntu due to some serious show-stopping bugs I ran into when installing it. But of course, your mileage may vary.
adrenaline: no harm, no foul. just thought i'd offer a rebuttal. |

| Well my choices are already according to what I've tried,
Kanotix, Libranet, Debian, Yoper, Mepis, Beatrix (ubuntu's alternative).
Ubuntu runs too slow on my celeron but its the last 1 in my list of Debian.
Now, I'm getting interested in Slackware, Vector Linux(slack based) and VidaLinux (gentoo based) , I was giving Gentoo a try but its too much for me not that geeky. |
