making the jump from Knoppix 3.6 to Debian

I'm sure this is a pretty well worn path, but...

I installed Knoppix 3.6 to my HD, and let it dual boot with XP.

Now, I want to move on from Knoppix and do a clean Debian install. (Knoppix has too many presets that I can't find/don't like and I want a little more control over my system).

I've downloaded and burned the ISO's for Debian 3.0-r2, so

I started the Debian install with the intention of letting whatever partition manager was in the installation process, overwrite the partition that I installed Knoppix on, but a few thoughts hit me before I committed fully.

If I just let the Debian install overwrite my Knoppix install, will it cause any problems booting? I don't want to loose my functional XP system yet (Soon, but not yet).

Also, the version of Debian that I downloaded is kernel 2.2, but the Knoppix install is 2.6....what kind of differences should I expect between these 2 kernels?

thanks

2.2 is a rather old kernel, so there won't be as many drivers that compile with it as development is really being focused on the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.
