no network

Just bunged Debian Sarge on me pc.

As with all flavours of Debian woody & sarge that I've tried it refuses to access the network/internet.

Nic is a Realtek 8139

modprobe 8139too loads the module

ifconfig eth0 gives me only the local loopback ( I think settings) with everything timing to zero.

ifconfig eth0 up gives me no such device

ifup eth0 gives me everything working fine

debconf / etherconf just basically tells me there's no network connection / devices.

The directory /dev does not contain eth0.

Any ideas? Debian is one of the last of the main distros I have yet to try.

All suggestions welcome.

Ta.

Knoppix/morphix etc all detect the card and automagically set it up fine.

did you run 'dhcpcd eth0' to get an IP for eth0?
