Can't get a resolution higher than 800x600! Whoa!

I tried Sarge netinst RC2 on a Via EPIA motherboard. It seemed ok until I noticed the resolution is 800x600, and the only options are that one and 640x480 (ha-ha).

I looked for a way to change it on Gnome in vain; the only answer I got from the net is "edit xf86config". Gimme a break! That is exactly the same ANCIENT answer I got when I first gave a try on Debian (just started) many years ago! Is this 21 century or not?

People talk too nice about Debian. I should have read the "unbiased debian review" (google it!) before expecting something usable. It's about time for Debian to realize that it's awefully out of date to force us to edit a config file in 2004.

No its not thats why we like Debian no cruft There is nothing wrong with editing conf files i pefer it. Why not use another disto instead of complaing.

I agree with Giro here. There are many distros for you to choose which one suits you best. Check out distrowatch.com for some objective reviews and pros/cons on the most popular distros. Find something that suits you. A lot of us like editing config files and doing all that we can via command line. This is our prerogative, as not doing so is yours. We co-exist because we all respect each others' choices.

That being said, this topic is henceforth locked to prevent needless argument.
