Can't get WOL working

I've installed W2K and Debian.

When booting with Windows and shuting down the computer, Wake On Lan works very fine.

Unfortunately when booting Debian and shuting down via "shotdown -h now" WOL doesn't work anymore. How to shutdown Debian without powering off the network card?

PS: ethtool shows "g" for wol.

What is the result of logging off normally?

right-click on the desktop
select logoff
go to "Actions"
select "reboot"
put your root password in

Seems like a lot of steps, but if you do it a couple times, it gets quicker.

Since I'm using server stuff only I've now desktop installed. Also my goal is a shutdown not a reboot.

Send a message via AIM to kkubasik
you can become root and enter the command 'halt' into a terminal

Halt shutdown the network card, too So, no lights blinking and no WOL.

I can't belive that WOL works very fine when using Windows on the computer but doesn't work with Linux. I usually thought Linux is #1 OS for network stuff.

The menu that I mentioned in my previous post has a "shutdown" option as well.

Ok don't start blaming Linux, saying that's it's the "#1 networking OS" and "something networking doesn't work"...

Try this. Become root, the do "ifdown eth0" or whatever your ethernet device is. On my comp, it writes a message saying something like "shutting down, but keeping WOL on".

@fpmchu: Sorry, it's just frustrating. Actually I've felt in love with Linux!

Which network card would you recommend for using WOL with Debian sarge? Is WOL working for anyone along with Debian? If so, which card do you have?

Thanks and Regards
Carsten

Do you have the cable between you NIC and motherboard connected?

No, there's no cable. According to the manual a cable isn't required for that card and indeed it works perfect with W2K.

However, I've now removed the card and I'm now looking for another one.

So WOL works for anyone with Debian: Which NIC are you using?
